The seven groups: Favorite breeds
Emily over on DreamEyce posted this a couple days ago, so I’m pulling a copycat because it’s a fun idea.
All answers subject to change based on the day of the week or the phase of the moon. I have so many different breed that I’m interested in, and it changes from month to month, so these are the current ones.
IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE A DOG FROM EACH CKC/AKC “GROUP,” WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?
(excluding your own breeds)
Group 1- Sporting
Group 2- Hound
Group 3- Working
Group 4- Terriers
Group 5- Toys
Group 6- Non Sporting
Group 7- Herding
1. Sporting: I’m not really a huge sporting breeds person. There are individual dogs I like a great deal, but I’m not sure I can really see myself owning any of them. Nevertheless, I’d pick the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. They seem a little less goofy than most of the retriever breeds, and a little spunkier. They’re also not so big, which I like. I’ve only met a few, but they’ve all been really nice dogs. That said, the only ones I’ve met have been owned by active dog sport people, not casual owners.
2. Hound: I’m not a fan at all of the scenthounds, but I do love me some sighthounds. I find them the most aesthetically pleasing of all the types of dogs out there. Although my list of breeds I want to own changes regularly, Greyhounds are a constant. I want to wait until after the cats are gone, because the type of Greyhound I like probably won’t be a good match for life with cats, but I have no doubt that there will be one in my life.
3. Working: This one is easy. Doberman, hands down. Love them. Sensitive and strong, sleek, smart as could be, athletic, and absolutely lovely to watch working. I want a red girl someday.
4. Terrier: I don’t like any of the true terriers much at all. Well, Jacks (er, Parsons) I can tolerate, but otherwise terriers just aren’t my thing. So I’ll have to go with another bull and terrier breed, and pick Staffy Bull. I adore these dogs. Little bullies, maybe a bit less firey, a bit less scrappy. Freaking adorable little fire plugs. Clownish. Happy. And the big bully smile that I so adore.
5. Toy: Chinese Crested. A naked one. These dogs make me laugh. They’re so funny, cheerful, bouncy. And, yes, naked. But with that wonderful mane. There are a number of toy breeds that I’d be interested in owning, but Cresties are on top (tonight).
6. Non-sporting: Standard Poodle, even though it makes me sad that they’re considered non-sporting and not sporting (they’re supposed to be water retrievers, dammit!), and despite their ridiculous hairdos. Though I do have to admit that I’d so put my Spoo in a Continental Just Because. Standard Poodles don’t get enough credit as Serious Dogs, but they’re smart and formidable and I like them a ton. (French Bulldogs get a mention here though because that’s going to be my old lady dog. When I’m old and crotchety and can’t handle a bigger, higher-maintenance dog, I’m going to have a Frenchie to keep me company and make me laugh.)
7. Herding: Belgian Malinois, though I’m not completely certain I’m enough owner for one. There was a Belgian Malinois rescue at the Baltimore DogFest and a bunch of mals there and I had total and terrible lust. They’re such attractive dogs, so smart, so ON. They intimidate me just a little bit but I think if I could be matched by knowledgeable people to the right starter dog, they’d be a great fit.
8. As a bonus, the Miscellaneous class: Xolo. Because they’re naked. The end.

I’m totally stealing this tomorrow. VBG
Fun idea but I can not commit to one from each group. Even if I allowed myself 2 or 10, it still wouldn’t work. I love dogs. That’s my problem.
Fun post. I really want a Doberman one day. Just love them. Love. Love. Love.
P.S. Love the fact that you have already identified your old lady dog.
1. Sporting: I don’t have to answer that one. You already know. The Bush’s baked bean dog!
2. Hound: Norwegian Elkhound. Rustic working dogs, very intelligent animals with a lot of wood sense.
3. Newfoundland dog: Because they are like giant retrievers.
4. Border terrier: good little earth dogs but also docile enough to be family pets.
5. Toy: Pug. The pug has to be the best small family dog out there. Very good natured and sturdy.
6. Non-sporting: The standard poodle, because it’s a retriever.
7. Border collie: Largely unspoiled and very easily trained, though they can drive someone crazy.
8. Boykin spaniel: It is one of the last water spaniel breeds still in existence.
Excellent hound choice! I’m with you on the mals, but not sure I’m enough owner to own one either.

[...] Anywhoo. Long rambling intro to this meme I found at save the pitbull, save the world. [...]
Wahoo! You picked my breed in the herding group! (Not all Mals are intimidating…One of my friends is a dog person, yet is “afraid” of Mals, but she loves my Pie girl.) :)
Group 1- Sporting: Weimaraner hands down. I’ve worked with them and I LOVE these guys. I love their intelligence and the fact that they’re short haired is a HUUUGE bonus.
Group 2- Hound: i’m with you on liking the sight hounds much more than the scent hounds. and this is another easy one for me as I pick the Irish Wolfhound, black or grey. Big and sweet, the coat i could live with. :)
Group 3- Working: Since I can’t pick my breed, I’d go with the smoothcoat St. Bernard. This was a tough one as I love the working dogs the most and there are a LOT of them I’d want. (danes, akitas, etc)
Group 4- Terriers: ack, another tough choice but I think I’d go with a Sealyham. Any dog good enough for Alfred Hitchcock is good enough for me. lol. They’re intelligent like all terriers, and unfortunately it may die out. Another reason I’d get one sooner than later.
Group 5- Toys: Min Pin. not a contest. sleek and smart and fiesty. sign me up.
Group 6- Non Sporting: A Boston. It’s a terrier with that lovely bully smile I adore like you. they’re cute little boogers.
Group 7- Herding: an Australian Shepherd b/c it reminds me of my BC and I couldn’t pick that breed :)
Group 8- Misc: Cane Corso. It’s a Molossus breed that reminds me of my bully babies…. enough said. (I love Big lugs)
